So there is no need to install K-9 Mail or import your certificate as other people have suggested. I hope that Google improves the email app to let the user import self signed certs when it encounters them.

I could select "TLS (if available)" but that's not what I want. A. As far as I can tell selecting "TLS (if available)" will use a self-signed certificate.
